IFA opened in Berlin this week, and the floor-care booths all said the same sentence in different fonts: you will not have to clean the cleaner.
Roborock’s IFA 2026 lineup is built around navigation and hands-free maintenance. Narwal’s fall machines wash the mop while they mop. Miele’s Duoflex HX2 adds AutoCut for hair and AutoClean for wet rollers. The photos look like a kitchen that never gets a human on their knees.
The dock does a lot. It does not do the jobs that make a robot quit in month four: a packed filter, a sensor coated in dust, a mop pad that never fully dries, and a side brush wrapped into a felt bagel. If you already fight pet hair on furniture, you already know the robot is not a closed system. Hair leaves the floor and then lives in the machine.
This is a maintenance article, not a buying guide. The new docks are better than the 2022 bins you emptied with a dustpan. They are still appliances. Appliances that sit in water and hair need a calendar.
What the booths actually claimed
Roborock used IFA to talk less about gimmicks and more about the boring failure modes. CNET’s Ajay Kumar, who has tested the arm-equipped Saros Z70 at home, described the Berlin push as performance plus hands-free maintenance across vacuums, wet-dry mops, mowers, and pool robots. The Saros 20 Neo gets dual-lifting side brushes for edges and the AdaptLife system to cross double thresholds up to 8.8 cm. The dock washes and dries the mop, empties the dust, and doses detergent. That is a real list. It is also a list of parts that still exist.
Narwal’s pitch is mopping, which robot companies have been lying about for years. CEO Junbin Zhang said a decade of work went into making mopping “truly effective,” and that Flow 2 is the peak of that work. FlowWash is described as a continuous refresh, not a damp pad dragging yesterday’s coffee across the kitchen. The same press note admits the limit out loud: some cleaning still needs the precision of a handheld, which is why Narwal is selling those too. When the company that sells the robot also sells the thing you use when the robot fails, believe the second product.
Miele is not a robot-vac brand in most American kitchens, but the Duoflex HX2 is the same idea in a stick: vacuum, mop, and a station that empties the dust. AutoCut is supposed to strip hair off the brush without you finding a knife. AutoClean is supposed to wash the wet rollers. Separate systems, which is the honest part. Hair and dirty water are different messes. One motor and a marketing sentence do not treat them the same.
None of this is fake. Self-empty docks cut the worst weekly chore. Self-washing mop pads cut the second-worst. The remaining chores are smaller and easier to ignore, which is how you get a machine that smells like a gym bag in November.
The dock is not a free pass
A self-empty dock moves dust from a small bin into a bag or a larger bin. That is the whole trick. The bag still fills. The cyclone still cakes. The hose between robot and dock still packs with hair if you have a dog that sheds in clumps.
Empty the dock bag or bin on a schedule you can see, not when suction dies. For a shedder, that is often every 4–6 weeks even on a “60-day” bag. The 60-day number assumes a clean apartment and short hair. If the bag is puffed up like a marshmallow, change it. Do not compress it with your fist to “get more use.” Fine dust goes through the pores and into the motor foam.
Wipe the dock’s charging contacts monthly with a dry cloth. A film of dirty water from mop washing is enough to make the robot sit there, full of battery anxiety, while the app says “returning to dock.” Unplug the dock before you wipe anything wet near the contacts.
The wash tray is the part the ads skip. Mop stations rinse pads in a shallow pan. That pan collects grit. If you never lift it out, you are washing today’s pad in last month’s sand. Pull the tray, rinse it in the sink, and look at the drain holes. Hair loves drain holes. This is the same logic as cleaning the tools you clean with: a dirty tool redistributes dirt. A robot dock is a tool that sits in a puddle.
Descaling is not optional if your tap water leaves crust on a kettle. The dock heats water or at least recirculates it. Mineral scale on heaters and nozzles is how “self-wash” becomes a smear of cold dirty water. Use the manufacturer’s descaler or a citric acid cycle if they allow it. Vinegar is not automatically safe in every tank. Read the tank label once. Plastic and seals fail in boring ways.
Mops still go rancid
The industry problem Narwal named is real. A spinning pad that never gets a clean rinse leaves a gray fan of residue on the floor. FlowWash and Miele’s wet-roller cleaners exist because the last generation of mopping robots trained people to hate mopping robots.
You still have to dry the pad. Heat-dry docks help. They do not help if you send the robot out twice a day and the pad never sits long enough to finish the dry cycle. A damp pad in a closed tray is a mildew farm. If you smell sour plastic when you walk into the kitchen at night, that is the pad, not the trash.
Pull the pad off once a week even if the dock “washes” it. Rinse it under hot water until the water runs clear. If it stays gray, replace it. Pads are cheaper than a service call, and they are cheaper than deciding the robot “doesn’t work” when the pad is glazed with detergent film.
Detergent dosing is the other quiet failure. Auto-dispense sounds like a hotel minibar. Too much soap leaves sticky floors that then attract grit, which the robot smears on the next pass. Use the brand’s detergent if the warranty people are going to ask. If you use your own, use less than you think. The floor should not feel tacky after a run.
Keep the robot off thick rugs while mopping unless the lift is actually working. Threshold climbing to 8.8 cm is a spec, not a personality. Test it on your actual door strips. A robot that climbs with a wet pad will paint the living-room rug. Put no-mop zones in the app on day one, not after the beige wool becomes two-tone.
Hair, filters, and the sensors nobody photographs
AutoCut is the feature people will buy for. Hair around a brush roll is the job that makes owners quit. Miele put a dedicated cutter on the Duoflex. Other brands use comb teeth or reverse spin. None of them get the hair that walks up the bearing and into the motor end.
Once a week, pop the brush out anyway. Hold it up to a light. If you see a dark ring at the ends, cut it. A seam ripper or a dedicated cutter tool is safer than a box cutter toward your thumb. Hair at the bearing is how you get the high-pitched squeal at 6 a.m.
Side brushes are sacrificial. They bend, then they stop reaching the baseboard. Replace them when the bristles look like a tired toothbrush. Dual-lifting side brushes on the Saros 20 Neo are still brushes. They still wind with thread.
Filters are the unsexy half of suction. Wash a washable filter under cold water until it stops running gray. Dry it for a full day before it goes back in. A wet filter is a mold disk and a motor strain. Keep a spare so you are not tempted to reinstall it damp. If the filter is paper or “high efficiency” and the manual says do not wash it, do not wash it. Tap it outside. Replace it on the interval in the book, which is shorter than the interval in your head.
Cliff sensors and camera windows live on the underside and front bumper. They go blind from a film of dust and cooking oil. Wipe them with a slightly damp microfiber, then dry. A robot that refuses to leave the dock, or that sees a dark rug as a cliff, often has dirty sensors, not a broken brain. This takes thirty seconds. It is the highest-return cleaning task on the machine.
Wheels pick up hair too. Flip the robot, pull the visible wraps off the axles, and check that the caster spins freely. A locked caster carves arcs into vinyl.
A calendar that matches the marketing
Daily: let the dock do the empty and the mop wash. Do not yank the robot off the base in the middle of a dry cycle because you want the kitchen to look finished before guests. The dry cycle is the anti-mildew step.
Twice a week, if you have pets or long hair: glance at the brush roll and the side brush. If you see a wrap, cut it then, not “on the weekend.” Hair tightens as it dries.
Weekly: rinse the mop pad in the sink. Rinse the wash tray. Wipe sensors and charging contacts. Check the dust bag window. This fits next to a weekly cleaning routine without becoming a project. Ten minutes, not a Saturday.
Monthly: wash or replace the filter. Wipe the robot’s vents. Descale if your water is hard. Look at the dock hose or port for a hair plug. Run a test on a dark rug and a door threshold so you find a navigation regression before it eats a cable.
Every 3–6 months: new pads, new side brushes, new filter if it is not coming clean. Brushes are wear parts. Treating them as permanent is how a $1,000 robot cleans like a $30 stick.
Write the monthly date on a tape label on the dock. Apps send filter nags, then they don’t, then you forget which account the robot is in. Tape does not need a firmware update.
Before you buy anything this week
IFA week is a bad week to impulse-buy a floor robot from a livestream. Specs are for the booth. Your house has door strips, dark rugs, chair legs, and a shedder.
Ask four questions the demo will not ask for you.
One: does the dock heat-dry the pad, or only wash it? Wash without dry is how you buy a mildew box.
Two: can you buy bags, pads, and side brushes in your country without a six-week wait? A “maintenance-free” machine with no spare parts is a paperweight with Wi-Fi.
Three: what is the actual threshold height on your doors, measured with a tape, not guessed? 8.8 cm is about 3.5 inches. Most interior thresholds are lower. The ones that are not will strand the robot with a full dirty mop.
Four: who empties the dock if you travel? A sealed bag can wait. A wet mop tray cannot. If you leave for ten days, pull the pad and empty the tray before you go. The robot can sit. The biology in the tray cannot.
If your current robot still has suction and a brush that turns, spend this month on maintenance instead of a new SKU. Cut the hair out of the roll. Replace the filter. Rinse the pad. Wipe the sensors. Then run it on a dirty kitchen and see if the problem was the machine or the last six months of neglect.
The IFA machines will be fine for people who like gadgets and will actually rinse a tray. They will annoy anyone who heard “hands-free” and took it literally. You still rinse a tray. You still cut hair off a brush. The dock just means you do it less often.
